Few vs. little

Little dan few adalah “quantifier”. Kedua kata tersebut memiliki konotasi negatif yang artinya ‘tak sebanyak yang diekspektasikan’.

Awas! Saat little dan few dibubuhi article – a little atau a few– kedua kata tersebut memiliki makna yang sama dengan ‘some’ dan berkonotasi positif.

Kapan kita gunakan few dan little?

Little diikuti oleh singular noun atau kata benda tunggal dan uncountable, sedangkan few diikuti oleh plural noun.

Dalam countable noun, maknanya sama dengan ‘not as much’ atau ‘not as many’. For example:

The play made little sense to me, but I’m glad you enjoyed it. (sense is uncountable) = the play didn’t make much sense.
We have very little data about rates of success and failure. (data is uncountable) = we don’t have much data.
There are few apples in the refrigerator. (apples is countable) = there aren’t many apples in the refrigerator.
She had few moments on her own. (moments is countable) = she didn’t have many moments.

A little diikuti dengan singular atau uncountable noun, sedangkan a few diikuti plural, countable nouns yang maknanya sama dengan ‘some’:

Could I have a little water?
We have a little space in our car if you want a lift.
There are a few good candidates that have applied so I’m sure we’ll find someone for the job.
Don’t take all the strawberries. Just have a few

Tidak hanya berkonotasi negatif, penggunaan few dan little terkesan lebih formal dan jarang dalam everyday spoken English. Umumnya, dalam kalimat negatif biasanya menggunakan ‘many’ atau ‘much’. For example:

The play made little sense to me, but I’m glad you enjoyed it. = The play didn’t make much sense to me.
There’s little money left. = She didn’t have much money.
few people were waiting. = There aren’t many people.
I’ve read few books at this time of year so the beaches are nice and quiet. = There aren’t many books.
